Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
December 21st 2022
Things I learned about Bosnia and Herzegovina: they have three presidents (one each for Croats, Bosniaks, and Serbs) and the country is made up of two autonomous self-governed regions, meaning it is very difficult to get anything done. I also learned that Sarajevo, the capital, has dangerously high levels of toxic air pollution; the fog in these photos is smog produced by burning wood, plastics, tyres, anything for warmth. Face masks are a common sight here, but are used to protect from the pollution, not COVID-19.
Taking a step away from the centre was a nice shift away from the hustle of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian area, and a quieter soviet vibe.
