Sofia, Bulgaria

Folk tradition in Bulgarian is quite vibrant, and mostly revolves around men wearing masks, jingling bells, and dancing suppoesdly to scare away spirits. It takes place during the New Year and Easter time around various villages and towns , but a festival also visited Sofia's largest park today.
There was also a lot of strange costumes, as well as traditions that I couldn't quite disentangle:
A man with over-the-top makeup, high heels, a blonde curly wig and a doctor's outfit would run around, stop at loud children, read their headbeat with a stethoscope and then open his small designer handbag into which the parent's would put some money. What?
There was a lot of bear-based persecution, for some reason.
