The weekend was an extended national holiday, Peace Memorial Day, and every hotel in every city was at least 3-10x the normal rate. There's nothing I dislike more than artifically inflated prices, so I got up the map of Taiwan hotels and scrolled until I found something reasonable. I stopped on the southeast coast, where there was a pocket of normal rate hostels in a tiny area that didn't even have a name. But, what started as a financial necessity turned into my favourite location yet. Along the area of Dulan and Donghe are beaches, mountains, and wild monkeys. That's basically all you need.
