Arnhem Land, Australia

The main tool that modern rangers use for controlled burning and wildfire suppression is the drip torch. Above, Joshua clutches his in one hand and a Mimal ranger hat in the other while standing in front of land he just burned. Although seemingly destructive, burning during the cold season is essential in protecting landscapes. But in late July, as the hot season soon takes over, rangers will put away their drip torches as fire management flips from intentionally starting fires to fighting them.
