Kea are infamous in New Zealand. Best known to outsiders as the alpine parrot, here they are synonymous with mischief. Almost five million years of social evolution on an island isolated from mammals has helped them become extraordinarily intelligent, and like the smartest of creatures, they possess a hearty dose of curiosity. Here, a wild juvenile kea withstood a snowstorm atop a house in Arthur's Pass National Park.
